A journey into the news market at Voodoo
There is no clear leader in news apps and they all have low retention. During my first few months at the Voodoo Apps Lab, we took this challenge as an opportunity to test some MVPs.
To kick things off, we iterated a lot on UI/UX there to find the most snackable way to consume news content.
On this project, I worked mainly as an iOS product engineer on the apps, providing and testing a lot of interactive features.
Being in a data-driven environment, we had the capacity to try and test a lot of ideas, even ones that may have looked bad from a first glance.
With a team of 4 talented people, we succeeded in reaching the same retention as top news apps like Google News, but it was still too low for a Voodoo app.
We concluded that the news market was not a good vertical to iterate on for our objectives, but we were left with plenty of learnings and best practice to reuse in our next apps ✌️
